social week
I had a very social week last week. on wednesday harald's granny had birthday and so I went there right after my classes. well, actually I left in the middle of the portuguese lesson, as we were squeezed into a really small classroom where the air was just horrible after the first 45 minutes. anyway, I knew what was expecting me: a lot of food. luckily I was had missed the coffee (and cake, of course) and therefore I was still able to move after dinner (and cake, of course), unlike on easter.
on thursday clemens and rianna had invited me for dinner. it wasn't just a dinner (which was delicious, by the way, thanks clemens!) but also a game night. as you might know, I don't play, but I did play that evening.
the next evening I had my dancing class again. I felt slightly bad about myself for skipping the class after venice, especially as I had promised maria to go out for a drink after the class. this time maria didn't show up. after the class harald picked me up and we went to julia's birthday party. we were really lame guests, I must admit. we sat on the sofa nipping on our own wine and talking to no one. I mean, there were other seats around us, but everyone seemed to prefer standing. I can't change that. on our way home we stopped at mcdonald's and wasn't that great! I can't remember the last time I ate at mcdonald's. I'm not a big fan or anything, but after more than seven months (it's possible I ate at mdonald's in the summer) I needed some junk food. I suppose it's more psychological than anything else... ;-)
the saturday I spent in bratislava with paulina, stefanie, clemens and rianna. there are loads of pictures of that day on facebook. it was a very nice day, indeed. we were lucky with the weather, the food was good and cheap, and we also had a small adventure. visiting bratislava from vienna has been made very easy. the return train ticket costs 14€ (12€ with a vorteilscard) and it includes all public trasport in bratislava. we had a great lunch in the old town and the huge portion and a coke cost me about 7€. I also had an ice cream (one scoop about 30 cent). the journey takes about an hour by train. I'd say the day was well worth it. next week jaana is coming here and I'm taking her to bratislava, no matter what. in the evening I would have had another birthday party to go to, but as both harald and me were very tired, we decided to stay home.

opiskelusta ranskassa
uutena harrastuksenani lueskelen silloin tällöin muiden vaihtareiden blogeja. useimmat on vaihdossa joko wienissä tai muualla itävallassa, mutta seuraan myös esimerkiksi maijan elämää ranskassa. tässä hieman opiskelusta siellä.

free gifts
ok. you might remember me telling about the people in front of the university advertising stuff for students. well, this semester I didn't only get newspapers, flyers and face-2-face-workers thrown at me, I also got a rather different present. trust me, it took me a while to find out what it was advertising for. by the way, it's a real egg (=no chocolate, I'm afraid) and already boiled.

on holiday - again
after two weeks of sommersemester I'm on holiday again. this time we have two weeks of easter holidays.
I'm still shocked about the fact that there are no holidays at all in vaasa anymore. officially there weren't any before either, but those who didn't have any exams during exam weeks ahd holiday. not anymore. now there're lessons in the morning and exams in the afternoon. that means people like me (who mostly have courses with 80% demanded attendance) have no chance at all to leave vaasa. why did they do that? what was wrong with the old "no holiday"-system?
anyway, now I'm going to enjoy my holiday.

new styles?
ok, I admit: it's not new in a way that nobody would know about it yet. it's new in a way that it's less than a year old and I've been here in vienna to see it born and bloom. and I'm not sure I'm happy about it.
it's called krocha. there's even an article about it on wikipedia, so I'm certainly not the first one to write about it. the krochas have conquered the city. they are young and tanned (solarium is an important part of their culture), they have lots of gel in their hair, but you're not likely to notice that as they're wearing caps in neon colours. they even have a special way of wearing them. they set the caps lightly on the top of the head - probably in order to maintain the hairdo.
on wikipedia there's a link to video of a krocha dance on youtube. I didn't know there's a special dance to go to the style, but when in ten years everyone is dancing krocha around the world, I won't admit it, you can count on that. after all, I was laughing about nordic walking, too. but I really hope it doesn't spread...

ERASMUS week
monday:
the new semester began. I had my first lecture, Theorie und Praxis der Dialektologie, and the room was full. I was trying to spot people who might be erasmus students - in vain. afterwards I went to the mariahilferstrasse to buy a new folder for the new semester. I almost got the autumn feeling - one of the best feelings there are.
tuesday:
again one new lecture. this time it was Bildung & Anthropologie - Deutungsmuster Jugend und Kultur, my first lecture at NIG. I can't say it was something special - it wasn't. in the evening I took part to the ESN city tour. the esn section organizes city tours for the new incoming erasmus students and so I pretended to be one. it was more interesting than I thought it would be. I mean, the places I knew, but not stories not. at some point it got too cold for us (the temperatures dropped from 15-18 to 5-7 degrees in a night) and so we headed for the stammtisch.
wednesday:
my only proseminar this semester is Einführung in die Phraseologie der österreichischen Alltagssprache, which I hope to be helpful next year in vaasa. I wasn't the only exchange students who thought it sounded interesting, there were at least six of us. the polish ones were very active all the time and I started to wonder if that's how everyone is in poland or if only the active ones get to do erasmus. later I had my first lesson of catalan.
my new friends invited me to the erasmus karaoke night and so I invited one of the exchange students from the proseminar, lucia. it was a nice evening and a cheap one, too. I had two drinks, the first one was 0,50€ and the second one 1,90€.
thursday:
my almost erasmus-free day. I had again only one lecture, this time about sexuality: Sexualität im 20. Jahrhundert: Globale Perspektiven und internationale Entwicklung. it's again a course without a book (just like jugend & kultur on tuesday) and without any reader. that means I must find someone who's ready to send his notes to me as I can't count on mine.
in the afternoon I went with harald to have the "first ice cream of the year". it was too cold to eat it outside, so it was only the first ice cream of the year eaten in a gelateria. I wasn't very pleased with my taste mix. I'm out of practise. we also went to the cinema to see sweeney todd in original. half of the audience were finnish exchange students and I swear I didn't know they were coming.
friday:
this semester I have a 3-day weekend. I suppose I should have done something useful with my free friday, but the most of it I spent reading the new nick hornby novel, slam. it's a great book, which was no surprise to me, but kept me busy for the day. in the evening I had my dancing lesson. maria had noticed that there were two people dancing almost only with each other and indeed it was so. now I have something extra to do during the lessons: other people's lives are so interesting... anyway, we repeated what we had learned so far (smooth waltz, viennese waltz, rumba, paso doble) and started with slowfox. after the lesson I went directly to the erasmus welcome party. it was ok, a lot like in the autumn. still lucia, daniel (from germany) and me went to the karaoke bar next door for the rest of the time before taking the nightbus home. or at least that's what I did.
saturday:

I met the others at two and we went to see the national library. I've been there once before, during my language course in 2003, and I could still remember the book shelves that seemed to continue to the skys and the ladders. it all reminded me of one of my favourite films, beauty and the beast, where belle slides with the ladders along the shelves in the bookshop or where the beast shows belle his library.
the others: paulina (chile), steffi (germany), clemens (holland), rianne (holland) and rebecca (germany).

excitement, disappoinment and old pictures
excitement:
today is the registration for all german courses. my hands were shaking already ten minutes before my first registration attempt. 11.59 I updated the site several times, but was still way too slow: from 30 places for the course I got place number 65. again I can only write to the professor ("I'm ERASMUS student, doing ERASMUS, maybe you can find a place for a motivated ERASMUS student") and hope for the best.
disappointment:
harald told me that there's an open lift at NIG, one of the university buildings. I mean that kind of a lift that you can see in old films, they go constantly up and down and people hop on and off while the lift moves. well, I added the lift to my "to do, to see"-list only to find out that the lift is gone. if anyone knows where I can find one, please let me know!

six months in vienna!
six months ago I landed at the airport of vienna. a lot has happened after that, but I still can't really believe that I've been here already for half a year. I don't know whether I manage to stay for another six months, but I'll certainly try.
I've booked us a table at the great portuguese restaurant, senhor vinho. I've already been there once and I'm sure I want to go there later at least once again, just to test my portuguese skills after the basic course.

good holiday week
this was a great holiday week. on monday I took harald to try lindy hop. it was okay, not as much fun as I expected, though.
on tuesday I went to the radio house to bring a present to one of the employees from a friend from finland. I also finally managed to get me a vorteilscard and started to plan a day trip right away. in the evening I met nina at down under. she has played icehockey with my brother, studied german in vaasa and is now here to work and play icehockey. we chatted quite a while and when she left, I changed to the next table to meet new erasmus students. I was very happy to have chosen that table as everyone was speaking german. later on samara joined us and we stayed until the bar closed.
wednesday was our lidl-day. once a week we drive to lidl to shop for the week and save quite a lot. this time harald's mum and granny came along and afterwards we had some coffee at granny's.
on thursday I had invited some friends for dinner. harald cooked for us (delicious, once again) and christian made his special drinks with the minttu my mum brought in october. it was a really nice evening, although everyone left quite early in order to catch the last bus.
on friday I finally started working on my proseminar-arbeit and in the evening I had my dance course. this time I was rather frustrated as we didn't seem to make any progress. the lesson lasts 1,5 hours and all we did was repeat the things we had learned the last time. well, we also learned one new step, but it was only an easier version of what we had learned earlier.
yesterday I wrote three pages more and spent the rest of the day and evening watching the second season of so you think you can dance.
today I needed to get out. it's 18 degrees, the sun is shining. I walked to schönbrunn and on the way there I saw the first ladybug this year. the summer is coming!

damn holidays
I really don't know myself very well. I've been looking forward to february (the holiday month) since christmas holidays or so, but now... I'm so bored.
I should write my proseminararbeit, I'm on page 5 (10 more to go), but I lack all motivation. I need something to keep me going and to give me the energy for writing.
but it's not easy. all my friends are either back home or on holiday at home. I must start doing more things on my own again. maybe I'll finally buy a vorteilscard that gives me 50% discount on trains and start to explore austria.
I know I shouldn't say this outloud, but I'm really happy the new courses at the university begin in two weeks! I want to be productive again!

so you think you can dance
aloitin eilen tanssitunnit.
