hmph. I probably shouldn't write this often as there are still these 3 months to go and sooner or later I'll run out of topics: after all, there is only a limited amount of topics you can discuss in advance.
my new fears are old fears, but they've just become more relevant. after my trip to vienna I've stopped worrying about the formality. I have to be a bit proud of myself - I was even able to crack a joke in a very polite way, without forgetting Sie. I suppose the university has done its job here, I was even almost comfortable with it. so, of course I needed a new problem, something to worry about during these three months and as I'm on my way getting used to the formality, I soon came up with a new problem.
now my biggest fear is that I expect too much similarity to germany. surely I know austria isn't germany, but I'm not sure if I really realize it. how much can I rely on my knowledge of traditions, for example? austria is to 74,1% (thanks, wikipedia!) catholic, I've spent my years in germany in mainly protestant areas. what about the language? I'm confident I'll learn it at some point, but is it soon enough? I hope I won't get all too frustrated all too soon because of it.
every day I plan something concerning vienna, I've even started to write a list about things I have to take with me, but of course only about stuff I might not think about later on (like butter knife, a couple of recipes and so on). it's a bit... sick, I admit it, but to everybody's relief I can tell that my work starts on monday and so I finally might get something else to think about.
I ask for your patience and comprehension. I just can't help it, I'm sorry.

Hello,
you don´t need to be concerned about similarities between germany and austria. Like I told you before: To compare Austria to Germany is a sin in Austria. We dislike our german neighbous like you dislike the swedes , probably even more.
Religion should not be a problem, especially not in Vienna as most people don´t really care about the church any more (the people in rural areas do care, but nobody cares about them!!!)
Your german is very good, so stop nagging about that, it is unnecessary. At work I have to talk to 100 people a day on the phone, and most of them speak german worse than you (and I dont mean people from other countries, I mean Austrians!).
The food is better in Austria than in Germany, the wine is better, the
traditions are quite easy to learn: The most important tradition in Vienna for example is to be as unfriendly as possible (especially if you are working at a cafe), but I had to endure this all my life and still consider myself as a friendly person;-)
If you have any more questions about austrian lifestyle and traditions feel free to ask.
Take care,
Harald
hehe... well, I'm not really worried about the similarities between germany and austria, but the differencies.
I'm not nagging about my german, I'm nagging about my austrian german. and religion was just an example.
of course the differencies are exactly why I chose austria, I just hope I won't experience a culture shock too harsh.
Mm .. if you compare you with me..
I am going to small village in france , where people dont welcome strangers even if they are french!
Also My french language is almost 1% ..so just wish me the good luck
